All Black Defeat
I am inspired to write this paper after observing the shock and depression so many New Zealanders have endured due to the All Black defeat in the World Cup. I am a New Zealander now residing in the UK and have never had any interest in rugby let alone supported nationalist or professional sport at any level.
I remember many years ago at University, a lecturer once discussed a survey researched by a Massey University student. The survey was the accumulated results of social events surrounding baby booms, or more to the point 37-40 weeks before baby booms. It was founded that the only major event that could be concluded for New Zealanders, was shock horror - All Black wins! Much to my disappointment, it was true. I find it interesting that we are so easily influenced, as a nation, by such a performance that it reflects our own. Nevertheless, it is obviously worthy of research and investigation in the moods and spirit of our people.
After seeing the overall dismay from kiwis over the All Black defeat, which I believe is just as apparent (if not more) at home than the UK has led me to look at the chart of New Zealand taken from the Constitution Act (17 Jan 1853 at 00:00 hours). Obviously other New Zealand charts will show similar patterns as may do the players, managers and coach but this particular chart is suffice in demonstrating the effect the defeat has had over the nation of New Zealand. I have not seen such depression in a nation since the death of Princess Diana. The constitution chart is also possibly one of the more accurate charts also considering the future of our very political and economical systems is uncertain.
Not many would argue that we are a proud nation and one that takes great value in our achievements in international sports. This can be seen in the 1853 chart by the leading planet - a dignified Jupiter in the second house - the investment in international sports. The chart shaping is a bowl, which highlights our determination and focus to matters on hand. We possess no oppositions in the chart except for the strongly placed angular planets of Saturn, Sun and Mars to the AS and MC reaffirming our drive for position in the world by exerting our macular warrior behaviour. The physical creativity demanded by a nation is a competitive, merciless and ruthless one that through over exertion can easily lead to burn out, traumatic loss and a blow to the nations esteem.
Jupiter in Sagittarius is trine Moon in Aries in the 6th house perhaps demonstrating our commitment to being organised, well practised and our excessive courage to fight foreign opponents to the end in order to gain international acclaim. The moon also rules the 10th house showing the aggressive and persistent nature of our people who take great honour in being grinders and hard workers. The 6th house is ruled by Neptune in Pisces in the 5th trine the Scorpio AS, depicting our ritual haka - a potent war dance that comes from the past to 'psyche' out our opponents. This also shows the experience of disappointment and confusion.
Uranus, ruler of the 5th, is in Taurus in it's detriment in the 6th with a wide conjunction between the chart ruler Pluto in Aries and a solidly placed Saturn in Taurus showing our Braun and muscle and need to stand out in the play. With Uranus cornered here may depict a hidden violence or a 'need to harm', which can be seen both within the game and even the nations 'increasing violent crimes'. Perhaps a little too much arrogance here, and with Uranus between Saturn and Pluto may show a reluctance to participate and contribute to the team or perhaps competitiveness between individual egos. What is very concerning is that the position of Uranus in the 6th shows a rather shattered nervous system, which New Zealand seems to be suffering at the moment.

Both Pluto and Uranus are squaring the Sun and Mars's illustrating excessive charisma, obsessive competitiveness and perhaps too much confidence or arrogance. This also depicts a nation pressure on its players and perhaps even dependence on certain wins to reaffirm or even ascertain its identity. It may also show distrust in our leaders that stem from deep resentment, sportingly, spiritually and politically. Pluto is trine Venus in Sag in the 2nd house illustrating the investment we place on representatives, in the way that they look and the image they project for our country, which we measure by popularity. Pluto is also trine Mercury. Mercury is rather trapped by it's placement in Capricorn even though its placement is in it's own house, the 3rd. But this is an intercepted house ruled by Saturn and Mercury is also conjunct Chiron. This perhaps echoes the Uranus theme in the breakdown and wound of our nation central nervous system placing a lot of pressure by being too over excited and far too eager. Maybe we could also take that there is a powerful communication wound here. One that is reflected in the way we pay too much attention to our neighbours, (Australia and S.A) and not enough to the global scheme of things. This also hinders our ability to speculate and stratagise which is reaffirmed by the charts deficiency of air. Mercury also sesqi-quatrates the 11th house cusp which represents our groups and teams that represent us. Interestingly, the 11th house cusp is at 18 degrees Leo, the degree of the eclipse in the UK in August, which has aspected NZ's natal Mercury bringing it into the grand cross experienced at this time. This placement of Mercury depicts the obvious disadvantages of communication and nervous system of the team.
We have a Sun conjunct the IC and Mars in Capricorn, showing that our very core is a sporting spirit depicted in our warriors - dressed in black. But, perhaps not the best losers or sportsmen. The 4th house ruler is the Moon in Aries in the 6th reaffirms this spirit but widely squares the Sun showing emotional frustration and an inability to actually realise defeat. Saturn, the house ruler is in Taurus conjuncting the DES, sporting our dramatic black uniforms and demonstrating our commitment. Unfortunately, both national and international faith for the All Blacks bringing home the cup instead was crushed by defeat, which has resulted in an astonishing depression felt by all.
So what happened? In retrospect it is probably not surprising what happened considering the All Blacks are symbolically representative of New Zealand (and of course it's accompanying charts). At present New Zealand is suffering an economic recess and threatened by political breakdowns. A lot of pressure resided with the All Blacks in terms of hope and restoring faith in a disheartened nation facing an election.
It is also not surprising that a lot of interesting transits and progressions were happening with the 1853 chart at the time of the tour and defeat and even less surprising - the feelings which resulted from it. I have felt it important to look particularly at the 45-degree aspects to give a detailed description of this manifestation.
Firstly it is important to note the Saturn return occurring at present for New Zealand which is also conjuncting the natal descendant. An obvious show of not living up to our expectation (and everybody else's), which has resulted in shame and embarrassment. The structure of the team has already been disassembled even before the last match with South Africa. All authoritative figures are expected to step down, including the captain. Of course, the Uranus, Saturn square at present has shaken up the image and prospects for the All Blacks as it has for the nation and will continue to do so. The unpredictable turn around of the match between France and New Zealand came as a shock allowing for stunned and disappointed supporters, which spread through the nation. The extent of the grief felt and the mourning that is being experienced is perhaps even more of a shock to some than the actual loss of the match. This is perhaps due to observing (and supporting) the physical challenges and vulnerability that symbolically represent the people of New Zealand at this point in time. Transiting Uranus is of course squaring the natal Scorpio AS showing a rapid loss of power and a blow to our image. A brutal suppression has been realised since the loss of the game against France, escalated by the play off with South Africa. This is confirmed again by Transiting Uranus's semi-square to Venus in the 2nd house, which has also illustrated a disassemblence of values, a downfall of popularity and a re-evaluation of investment. Economically this is quite drastic for both New Zealand and the All Blacks, and probably just as bad for Adidas whom will no doubt withdraw its sponsorship. The 1853 chart's natal Uranus tends to be cornered also. Although no transits are directly hitting Uranus, the progressed MC forms a sesqui-quatrate with it, and the progressed AS and Sun form a semi-square. This places extreme demands and tests of strengths with the possibility of separation if team solidarity is not adhered to. A battle of the egos has resulted in separation, which has subsequently resulted in the mourning of a nation. Interestingly, how as a nation we disassociate ourselves with the 'defeated' and leave them to 'stand alone'. This may show a necessity to re-evaluate us as a nation, as the All Blacks are doing as a team. These aspects make us question who we are, what we are, and where we fit in the larger scheme of themes.
Transiting Neptune in the 4th house, which is scandalously dissolving our boundaries and safety net could be responsible for so much of the offside penalties awarded to France as well as the missing of conversions. Transiting Neptune makes a semi-square to Jupiter in the 2nd illustrating both the inability to accurately speculate and is also reflective over the racial debates on the tour, with both the haka and the anthem being sung in Maori. This is also reflective of the conflicts within our nation as we continue to live in separate worlds - separated and challenged by each other's values and belief systems.
Transiting Pluto is in the 1st house, which would highlight our overwhelming power and potency displayed throughout the cup. In the UK betting tolls, the odds were 100 to 1 the All Blacks would win. No one doubted our warriors would take it away - even the French. Transiting Pluto in the 1st house is squaring natal Neptune in the 5th, reaffirming the charisma and performance of the haka. However, misdirection and confusion as to how to get back on top is evident - nationally also. It has become quite apparent that while we win, we stride in - when we slide - we start spiralling downwards. As both a nation and our attitude towards our players shows a tendency to torment ourselves over such dramatic events. Transiting Pluto is also sesqui-quadrate the natal MC, meaning it semi-squares the IC. This indicates a traumatic event on national level that has been observed and felt globally. Basically, our image has been shot!
The progressed moon in Leo that stands high in the 10th, that looks proud and even arrogant is depicted with the All Blacks wearing their hearts on their sleeves. And knowing we couldn't hide we once again showed our vulnerability both as a team reflected by the people and it's nation. The progressed moon is sesqui-quadrate the natal Chiron, which ultimately describes the wounded soul and overstrain of not only the players but also the nation itself. This position recapitulates the depressive and upheavalled soul of the nation.
It will be interesting to see the changes that will have to arise for the next cup. Who's to say what will happen? The unpredictable events preceding the next cup may result in drastic changes to the way we push our players out there. Will there be a change of uniform, or of code, most definitely image. Or will we even qualify? Many of these will be determined by our own sorting out at nation level, no doubt.
